For the second year in a row, the BYC’s Bellingham Youth Regatta, a Northwest Youth Racing Circuit event, was big success. Over 45 kids, ages 8-18 from all around the Pacific Northwest including Portland, Seattle, Port Townsend and Orcas Island raced Saturday and Sunday in Laser Full Rig, Laser Radial Rig, FJ’s, Opti Red (Ages 13-15), Opti Blue (Ages 11-12) and Opti White (Ages through 10) divisions. The conditions were nearly perfect for this two day event with steady southerly winds around 7 -13 knots. A little early morning rain on both days opened up to warm and sunny skies. After racing on Saturday, the Bellingham parents assembled a regatta dinner for the hungry sailors who raced 7 races that afternoon. At the results party on Sunday, the kids enjoyed a bounty of Little Caesar’s Pizza made possible by member Bob Nevitt who owns the local Bellingham Franchises (Thanks, Bob!).

Bellingham kids made up the large contingency of the field, however the other teams brought up some pretty stiff competition. Although Miles Johannessen and crew had rocked the FJ’s for all but one bullets on Saturday, his no show allowed Liam Hood and crew Riley Alsop with one first on Saturday and the rest seconds to take the overall 1st place with straight bullets on Sunday. The Opti class brought out 7 kids including several from the BYC Race Team; Logan Jenkins, Jack Knowles, Devon Bumstead, Ria West. Competing in the Laser class, were Jeffery Werner and Jack Thompson.

Big thanks to race chair Scott Wilson and BYC Race Coaches Megan Link and Taylor Martin. Also Youth Sailing family volunteers, Amy Kashiwa (Riley & Aspen Alsops’ mom), Andrea and Steve Hood (Liam’s parents), Jonathan Knowles (Jack’s Dad), John Stocklass, Mark Santosuosso and Katie Day (Jack’s Parents) Jerry Roloson & Super Race Volunteer Terry Tavelli.
