San Juan Sailing and San Juan Yachting invite BYC members to their San Juan Islands Safety Briefing offered during the cruising season. The 45 minute briefing is given each Friday at 4:30pm and most Saturdays at 9:30am in the Ward Room. BYC members are invited to any session, but more seats are available at the 9:30am Saturday briefing. RSVPs are appreciated–but not necessary—by calling 671-4300.

The briefing covers, among other things, how to protect against damage from docks and rocks, communications protocol, propane safety, crew overboard procedures, proper anchoring techniques and safe ways to tie onto a state park buoy. Some of the recommendations may surprise you!

Rock avoidance is the major focus of the briefing. It includes the 9 most frequently hit rocks in the San Juans, a graphic chart showing rock hit areas in red, and “safe cruising routes” in green.

San Juan Sailing and Yachting undertook a major study of rock hits in the San Juans to identify why rock hits occur. The briefing covers the results of that study, the 5 major—and surprising–causes, and simple steps to prevent them.

Following the Safety Briefing, the staff also offers a 45 minute Cruising Orientation Briefing on how to maximize your enjoyment of the San Juans, including how to find Orcas, ideal cruising publications, favorite destinations, the dangers of cross currents, customs procedures and other hints gleaned from over 30 years of cruising the islands.

There is no charge for the briefings.
