This is part 1 of two presentations on First Aid for BYC and BSPS Boaters. 

Part 1 is mainly lecture with "show and tell", Part 2 (scheduled for May 20) is hands on and will include COB/MOB. Numbers will be limited to 25 for part 2.  If their is demand for more we plan another session.

 

Local boater and MD, Dr. Coggan will lead these presentations.

 

Part 1 will:

Address medical situations that may be encountered by coastal
cruisers, how to minimize such incidents and how to manage them when they do occur.
The program will address:

  • Preparation and prevention
  • The contents of a first aid kit
  • Minor medical problems and how to manage them.
    • Cuts and abrasions – wound care
    • Sprains and strains
    • Minor burns and scalds
    • Sea sickness
  • Major medical situations
    • Assessing the problem
    • Initial management
    • Conscious vs unconscious
    • Head injury/stroke
    • Cardiac events
    • Seizures
    • Hypothermia/cold water immersion
    • Carbon monoxide poisoning
    • Fractures and hemorrhage
    • Calling for help and preparing the victim for transportation

Participants in Part 1 are strongly encouraged to attend the more hands on Part2 Workshop on May 20th

7:00pm April 7th in the Marina Room, Registration is free to BYC and BSPS members
