The Mai Tai
The year was 1944 when Trader Vic created the most iconic, most bastardized, and most misunderstood Tiki cocktail: The Mai Tai. Meaning “out of this world; the best!” in the Tahitian language, the Mai Tai is a tropical balance of Jamaican rums, flavors of orange, lime, almond, and mint, delivering a taste sensation that is the mainstay of the Tiki lounge. Due to the closely guarded Trader Vic recipe, however, other bars were forced to guess and modify the ingredient list, often grabbing whatever rum and fruit juice came to hand, adding a float of dark rum, sticking an umbrella in it, and calling it good. This sweet, syrupy, inconsistent abomination is what most of us associate with a Mai Tai, but the original recipe is anything but! Several hours of selfless research in Tiki bars around the world have gone into the re-creation of the Trader Vic’s Mai Tai: 2 oz of blended Jamaican rums, Pierre Ferrand Dry Orange Curacao, orgeat syrup, a touch of demerara syrup, fresh lime juice and garnished with sprig of fresh mint, the Mai Tai can be enjoyed on Tiki Night for only $9
Skidmark’s Folly
An off-the-cuff sensation mixologist extraordinaire Dan Wooldridge (also known as Skidmark to his Pirate Brethren), created Skidmark’s Folly when a fellow BYC Pirate was feeling “rummy”. The Folly is a delicious blend of Jamaican and Venezuelan rum, lime, and orange. Potent yet refreshing, enough of them might lead you into a folly of your own. Only $9 on Tiki Night!
