A Letter to the Membership of the Bellingham Yacht Club

"New" Breakwater Restaurant and Lounge

Jack Black

As some of you know, Bob Walston, (the operator of the Breakwater Restaurant), became ill and had to close the business.

A new group of people comprised of some of our own BYC members bought out the lease and took over the operation of the "New" Breakwater Restaurant and Lounge. We will serve you in the same fine way that the past ownership did. We will give you the same top quality food and beverages that you have come to enjoy at a lower price.

Our lounge will include a large screen TV for sports and other special events; and on weekends we will have live music for your dancing or listening pleasure. We hope to liven up the old place and make it your place to go for good food, a cocktail (or two), or just plain fun.

The menu will be changing around the start of the New Year. We are also planning a New Year's Eve Party, so make your reservations now!!

One change will be that you MUST show your BYC membership card FIRST in order to get your discount, you will not be asked for it.

Our hours will be Tuesday thru Thursday 4 pm til 11 pm; Friday and Saturday, 4 pm til 1 am.

We are also contemplating opening for lunch and possibly Sunday Brunch later this year. We are always open for your ideas and comments and would appreciate them. Your hosts Dell Jaha, Mike Minge, and Jack Black are at your service. Come by and join us for dinner and cocktails or just say Hi! at the New Breakwater Restaurant and Lounge.

1997 Lighted Boat Parade

Pandora Larner, Programs

A big thanks to all of you who held in there waiting for the weather to cooperate. I know most of you looked outside and groanedórain, wind, more rain! Calls to the Coast Guard followed, and then the weatherman was rightócalm in the afternoon.

I knew the weather would more than likely change at least a dozen times during the day, so we just kept telling everyone that the parade would go on as scheduled. Thank you, weather gods. The evening was not only rather calm, but almost balmy and warm.

We had more than 30 boats decorated and they were a beautiful sight on Bellingham Bay. We filled all the boats to maximum and had a great time.

Our Club and new restaurant did a great job with the buffet. Many, many thanks to Dell Jaha, Jack Black, and Mike Minge.

The beautiful new Sextant Perpetual Trophy went to Serendipity, Past Commodore Steve Ross's boat, for Best of Parade winner. Just One More, captained by Fred Byrum received Novice Award; and Kno Teak, captained by Wayne Fero of Shelter Bay Yacht Club received the Community Award.

Our cosponsor, the Sextant Mutual Funds, did a fabulous job in advertising and the Ferry Terminal was stand-up capacity only. Good for the community! Again a special thanks to all, and here's to smooth sailing and calm waters in 1998.

Children's Christmas Party

The Children's Christmas Party, Sunday, Dec 14, had a big turnout. Santa was there along with a clown. Activities included storytelling, musical chairs, a balloon stomp, caricature drawing, and a visit with Santa. Punch and cookies was the fare and each child took home a nice treat compliments of the First Mates. Santa was played by BYC's Bob Kehoe and the clown was member Gerry Pazaski's son. There were more than 25 children in attendance.

Christmas Party Successful

On Friday, December 5, the BYC celebrated the holidays with its first annual Christmas Party. A great time was had by all of the 50+ members who attended. We even had a visit from Santa. (Thank you to Santa's helper, Bob Kehoe). The gift exchange was great fun, but Santa must have been exhausted, since we all opened our gifts while sitting on his lap! The Member Room was beautifully decorated for the holidays thanks to Dick Johnson and The First Mates. And the appetizers were delicious, thanks to Roberta McCord, Karen Callery, Loraine Boland, Marge Pisarczuk, Rose Atwood-Knudson, Meredith Ross, and Clara Severson.

1997 Special Peoples Cruise

The theme of this year's Special People's Cruise should be "Victoria Star Saves Christmas." Captain Drew Schmidt volunteered his vessel at the last moment, allowing the event to take place. The Victoria Star took approximately 120 while BYC boats took nearly 40 special people on a lighted boat cruise on Bellingham Bay. As always, event organizers had one eye out for Santa and one eye on the weather. As it turned out it was a beautiful evening with a small amount of rain at the very end of the cruise. Look for a longer article in the February Jib Sheet.

Building & House Report

Mike Minge, Chair Building & House Committee

Those of you who have seen the freshly remodeled Ward Room can appreciate the time and talents from our generous members.

Almost all the labor was donated by people who have heart and made time to take on a task that would overwhelm the best of us.

Speaking of being overwhelmed, I think the City of Bellingham understands that to the fullest. I will say that the City people went out of their way to take care of the spill problem, and help us on our way with our remodeling job.

Updating everyone on what the Building and House Committee and generous volunteers have completed so faró

The Building and House Committee took the month of December off to work on our own projects and to be with family and friends.

After you see the almost-completed Ward Room, you might want to thank these most talented people. Our committee members are: Bud Swanson, Pete Acalin, Ron Adderley, C.B. Williams, Dick Beckley, Bud Peterson, Steve Moore, and nonmember Gene DenHartog. And thanks to Rose Atwood-Knudson for her fine design work. Happy New Year to all, and wait by your phone for a call, the next work party could be for all.
